Making the Most of LinkedIn for Landing Pharmacy Jobs

By Kathleen H. Pankin, PharmD, MS, BCPS

Social media is a great way to find your next pharmacist or pharmacy tech job. It’s a free resource to research companies, get names of managers and supervisors, network, and find open positions. But what can YOU do to get noticed, get interviewed, and get offers?

Table of Contents

First, Create a LinkedIn Profile

Go to their website and make a free account. See how others in your industry, at your level or at the level you want to be at complete their profiles. Research the Open to Work feature and determine if and when you want to use it. Learn about the visibility differences between your public profile, the profile visible only to you, and the information your connections and followers see. And decide if you want LinkedIn Premium to help with your job search.

Fill It Out

Browse profiles of pharmacists, managers, and techs at companies you’re applying to. What professional experience do they have? Look at their certifications and organizations they’re involved in and compare it to your own.

You don’t have to be a social media manager, be experienced in marketing or branding, or have any credentials to notice which profiles you are most interested in reading and clicking on. Which profiles evoke a positive, professional, enthusiastic vibe which makes you feel that they love their job? Take notes and then apply what you see to your profile.

And consider a professional headshot or use a photo editing app on your profile picture. LinkedIn will constantly display their “Add photo” button until you add a profile photo. And you may see their statistic on your profile that members with a photo receive up to 2.3 times as many profile views as those who don’t.

Add People

If you give LinkedIn permission, the Connections You May Know feature will help you find connections so you can send invites to people you know or want to know. This feature will build your network and show you updates and posts from them in your feed.

Be sure to periodically check your invites so you can review who is sending you an invite to be and connection. There’s a difference between following and connecting with someone so familiarize yourself with the buttons. Some healthcare workers prefer the website, others like the LinkedIn app. You might enjoy reconnecting with old friends and coworkers while growing your network so we encourage you to use their People You May Know feature.

Engage

LinkedIn defaults to filing your feed with what your connections and companies you’re following are up to. You can react, comment, repost, and tag as much or as little as you want to the posts in your feed. Once you’re comfortable, start posting and using hashtags too! If there’s a post which catches your eye and compels you to engage with it, try to notice what you like about it and to get inspiration for making your own.
